From a recent interview, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt talked about the enterprise innovation strategy inside Google.
“We prefer them to run rampant,” said Schmidt. “The most clever ideas don’t come from the leaders, but rather from the leaders listening and encouraging and kind of creating a discussion,” he said. “Wander around … and try to find the new ideas.”
Google encourages its engineers to spend 20 percent of their time on “something of the engineer’s own choosing,” with the idea that focusing resources on activities that are not directly related to the company’s core business will ultimately lead to new discoveries
The open source community has been particularly adept at attracting some of the “best and brightest of new talent,” in part because it is an international phenomenon, Schmidt said. “I know this is a shock, but not all the best programmers are sitting here in California,” he said.

Beyond Bullets had a great tip about using PowerPoint to test new ideas:
Tip: The next time you have a new idea, try field-testing it first in a PowerPoint presentation. If it’s a brief idea, present the idea on a single slide, and then ask other people what they think about it. Or if you have a much larger idea or a sequence of thoughts, put a single idea on each slide and develop it out in a storyboard… When you challenge yourself to do the counter-intuitive, like writing your slides first, you open yourself to new possibilities you may not have seen from a previously limited view

MIT IDEAS Competition 2003-2004.
IDEAS is a competition started in 2001 at MIT to promote student innovation and inventiveness for community needs. The IDEAS Competition provides an opportunity for members of the MIT community to develop their creative ideas for projects that make a positive impact in the world. Participants work in teams to develop designs, plans, strategies, materials and mechanisms that benefit communities, locally, nationally or internationally.
